For many attendees, this ITS World Congress will be their first exposure to 857 IRD’s VectorSense sensor suite – a new technology recently introduced at the ITS Europe conference in Helsinki. An operating model was later demonstrated at the 2014 NatMec conference in Chicago.

The VectorSense sensor suite provides previously unavailable vehicle and traffic data including lane position information, single/dual and super single tyre measurement and identification of low pressure tyres, all at highway speed, for use in commercial vehicle operations (CVO), toll road operations, and vehicle safety and traffic data collection applications. Here in Detroit, IRD will present a working demo of the VectorSense sensor suite which will provide information to be displayed by the IRD VI2M (Vehicle Information in Motion) data collection system software.

Randy Hanson, IRD’s VP and COO, will give a presentation during the ITS World Congress on the VectorSense sensor suite titled, VectorSense Technology for Enhanced Traffic Information, Safety and Corridor Management. “The tyre position and footprint data provided by the VectorSense sensor suite opens up new possibilities for traffic data collection, commercial vehicle safety, and toll road operations,” says Hanson. Beta testing of this new product with interested government and private participants will be starting early next year, with a full product launch expected in late Spring 2015.

There is an increasing demand for automated, continuous, real-time provision of vehicle and traffic data and IRD says its weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems with integrated machine vision have positioned the company well to meet this demand. A recent project for Oklahoma DOT utilised the company’s expertise to provide WIM and e-screening technology with the enforcement goal of screening all commercial vehicles on the basis of weights, dimensions and credentials. IRD provided a comprehensive, automated solution incorporating highly accurate WIM scales, non-intrusive sensing, and machine vision for this system.

Having won the 2016 Intertraffic Innovation Award, Cross Zlin is back again with a host of new products including a shortlisted fibre-optic based weigh-in-motion system called OptiWim. Marketing manager Libor Sušil describes the system as weigh-in-free-flow as it measures the axle across the full lane width regardless of the position of the wheels and the sensor can also detect underinflated tyres even on twin wheel configurations. He likens the measuring method to that of a strain gauge but adds that th
