Japanese interactive 3D simulation and modelling software specialist 848 Forum8 is showing its Micro Aerial Pilotless Scanning system (MAPSs) at the show.

It demonstrated the mini-drone on Tuesday night at the Nouveau Stade Bordeaux, adjacent to the Exhibition Hall.
MAPSs, which uses a small, remotely-piloted DJI Phantom 3 quadcopter, maps a predetermined area by flying via GPS waypoints. Forum8 describes it as a low-cost method of producing a range of Geo, GIS and 3D Interactive mapping products and city models.

Flight time is up to 10 minutes, depending on weather and battery capacity.

During that time, the cameras mounted on the drone take between 500-700 photographs, which are then processed by Mitto Design of the US.

The resulting imagery can be processed to create 3D point clouds, real-time interactive 3D virtual reality simulation models or digital terrain maps.

What future is there for automatic number plate recognition? Will it be supplanted by electronic vehicle identification, or will continuing development maintain the technology's relevance? In recent years, digitisation and IP-based communication networks have allowed Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to achieve ever-greater utility and a commensurate increase in deployments. But where does the technology go next - indeed, does it have a future in the face of the increasing use of, for instance, Dedi

Transit priority is proving a win-win in Europe and Australia. David Crawford reports. Technology that integrates with the Australian-originated Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS) is driving bus signal priority and performance analysis initiatives on both sides of the world; in its homeland, with a major deployment in 2015, and in the capital of the Republic of Ireland.

The greater Tokyo conurbation is the world's largest metropolitan area and, although around 80 per cent of travel is by public transport, subject to notorious traffic congestion.

Geoff Zeiss of Autodesk talks about the convergence going on between GIS and other software systems which will revolutionise the design and construction of nations' utilities. The issue is that we're getting old. But forget the discovery of body hair in places it never used to be, whether or not to dye, contact lenses versus glasses - in fact, put aside entirely the decision to age gracefully or outrageously; the personal implications pale next to the effects on wider society. Faced with the problem of how
