Ford and Baidu to trial self-driving vehicles in China
Ford has joined forces with technology company Baidu to test Level 4 self-driving vehicles in China over the next two years.
Level 4, established by the SAE International (formerly the US Society of Automotive Engineers), will allow the vehicles to operate without intervention from a human driver.
A report by CNBC says Ford’s self-driving vehicles are equipped with Baidu’s autonomous driving system Apollo. The cars are expected to be deployed in on-road tests by the end of 2018.

In July, Baidu extended its %$Linker: 2Internal<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?><dictionary />4362180link-external partnershipfalse/sections/general/news/daimler-and-baidu-to-develop-automated-driving-and-connectivity-in-china/falsefalse%> with German car manufacturer 2069 Daimler to develop automated driving and connectivity projects in China.
The partnership initially formed in 2017 to develop the Apollo platform. Daimler also joined the Apollo Committee, a group whose stated aim is to accelerate research on safer solutions in automated driving and promote the drafting of related regulations.
The Driverless Technology Conference (DTC’16), which takes place in Milton Keynes, UK, on 22 November, will focus on accelerating growth within driverless technology and maintaining the UK’s position at the forefront of industry development.
DTC'16 addresses the new business models and use cases that are linked to driverless technology actively being pursued, researched and sold by major automakers and key disruptors in the market alike.

Chinese bus manufacturer Yin Long intends to produce electric buses at Ikarbus’ factory in Serbia by the end of the year, according to a report by SeeNews.
Yin Long acquired Ikarbus through its subsidiary Lanzhou Guangdong New Energy Automobile, and intends to hire 200 employees at the factory and use it as a hub to expand its business.
The factory is in the city of Belgrade. Ikarbus produces low-floor and articulated city buses as well as intercity buses.
Continental has secured a follow-on order for future metro projects in the Chinese city of Shanghai to help increase usage of rail and reduce gridlocks on roads.
The project will expand the metro network from 16 to 22 lines by 2020 and cover an area of 970km.

Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance is to develop a system which will allow local governments to carry out virtual tests of autonomous vehicles (AV).
A report by The Japan News says the insurance company is hoping to reduce costs associated with real-world testing by providing a virtual environment which will feature road conditions based on 3D maps.
This project stems from an agreement with Tier IV, a developer of autonomous driving technologies and measuring technology firm Aisan Technology.
