Ericsson demos autonomous parking via solar energy

5650 Ericsson has launched a solar-powered car which finds out which parking spot contains the most sunshine and then moves to position itself accordingly.

The company says it can drive autonomously to a particular space to recharge its batteries.

The experimental Stella Era vehicle, which has a range of 1,800km, is equipped with 5650 Ericsson’s Solar 8034 Smart parking solution and can also share its energy with other electric vehicles parked next to it, the company adds.

Solar Smart parking is based in Ericsson’s connected vehicle cloud, a digital platform aimed at helping vehicle manufacturers deploy and manage new services for connected vehicles.

Solar Team Eindhoven - a group of students from the Technical University Eindhoven in the Netherlands - designed and constructed Stella Era.

Ericsson’s country manager Everth Flores says: “The development of a solar car is an excellent example of our commitment to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

As cycling becomes an increasingly popular method for commuting and recreation, what moves are afoot to keep the growing numbers of cyclists safe on ever-more-busy roads? Alan Dron puts on his helmet and pedals off to look. It would have seemed incredible just a decade ago, but cycling in London has become almost unfeasibly popular. The Transport for London (TfL) June 2017 Strategic Cycling Analysis document noted there were now 670,000 cycle trips a day in the UK capital, an increase of 130% since 2000.

  • Parking provision dictates commuters’ modal choice

Researchers from two American Universities have found the provision of parking spaces can encourage automobile use and increase traffic congestion. It is well understood that increased automobile use is linked to congestion, environmental degradation and negative health and safety impacts. Trials of smart parking technology has shown a reduction in circulating traffic (looking for parking) can ease congestion and that the cost of parking can influence commuters’ modal choice. Now, researchers at the univers
