This year’s ITS World Congress will provide a unique look at what emergency responders do on the scene of an accident and how the developments in transportation technology help make things run smoother, faster, and safer.

Emergency and Incident Response is a critical element in the management of transportation networks today throughout the world. Emergency Responder Day is an opportunity for transportation professionals and emergency responders to collaborate and learn from each other the many opportunities available through ITS. The bridge between transportation and emergency response is always needed as we all have One Mission and together we can have One Response.

On Tuesday, September 9, attendees will be able to participate in a full day of activities including an opening session for all participants of Emergency Responder Day, guided exhibit hall tours, technical sessions specific to ITS and emergency response, and watch a mock version of a traffic incident involving an overturned tanker truck.

The mock incident demo will show first responders arrive, assess, respond, and clear the scene, using the latest ITS technologies. Representatives from various first responder communities will be available for questions and to provide real-time narration of the events as they unfold.

Emergency responders who attend Tuesday’s events in uniform will receive free admission to the mock incident and exhibit floor.

Opening Session

The opening session features Gregory C. Johnson, P.E., 1688 Michigan Department of Transportation’s Chief Operations Officer and Sergeant Dan Dytchkowskyj, Erie County Sheriff’s Office and Vice-Chair of the Transportation Safety Advancement Group (TSAG). Sergeant Dytchkowskyj will give a keynote presentation on how emergency response can benefit from using ITS. This session will also provide valuable information for all participants of Emergency Responder Day and the activities that have been planned including exciting details about the mock incident demo.

Exhibit Hall Tours

The exhibit hall features ITS technologies throughout the world that have been used to enhance the transportation systems and emergency response. Guided tours or self-guided browsing of the exhibit halls are available. Guided tours will be conducted by members of the Transportation Safety Advancement Group and will be meeting at the TSAG kiosk in the 560 ITS America Pavilion.

Other special events for first responders include a guided tour of the exhibit hall and a variety of programmatic sessions.
