Fundamental to efficient toll systems and traffic management solutions is enforcement, a core competency of 43 Efkon and which it is highlighting at this ITS World Congress. The company says its range of stationary, portable and mobile enforcement solutions is based on five major modules: reliable vehicle detection, flexible and high performance vehicle classification, car to infrastructure communication (all DSRC variants), court proof evidence based on high quality imaging, and automatic assessment.

Efkon's product line for portable enforcement features compact, lightweight and easy to set up systems. The company says that despite its portability it offers full functionality and unrestricted performance, due to its modular and flexible architecture it can easily be adapted to individual applications and working environments – from GNSS and DSRC over licence plates to toll stickers and HOV compliance checks.

In Austria and several other countries, the toll sticker system has established itself as the tolling method for vehicles with a maximum permissible gross weight under 3.5t because it is easy to use and economical. However, as Efkon points out, it is often difficult to control this kind of system at places along motorways and expressways where physical vehicle controls are not possible. In response, Efkon has developed a portable system for the automatic enforcement of toll stickers which helps to automatically identify toll violators without interrupting the flow of traffic, thus increasing traffic safety. The automatic system contributes significantly to improving the safety for both road users and for toll enforcement officers, as they are used in those places where safety reasons do not permit manual monitoring.

Meanwhile, the company points out that its mobile enforcement systems are able to ‘float’ with the traffic, check vehicles for toll charge payment and separate violators immediately from freely flowing traffic.

Icoms Detections offers radar stop-line detection
Icoms Detections has added an easy-to-use radar for the detection of stationary vehicles at the stop-line to its I-tersection range. A vehicle approaching or stopping in the targeted activates a relay loop, which is held until the vehicle moves. The advantage over inductive loop technology is the absence of the need for roadworks for installation. The sensor also provides warning of whether vehicles fail to start as expected, because of congestion, obstruction, driver inattention and so on. At this year’s s
