Mobile road weather information sensor Marwis, developed by German measurement and control technology company 6478 Lufft, can be mounted on any vehicle to collect real-time weather data such as road surface temperature, dew point, water film height, road conditions (humidity, snow, ice and frost) and grip (friction) as well as other environmental data.

Marwis measures meteorological data and road condition information 100 times per second.  At a driving speed of 80km/h, the mobile sensor records every 20cm, regardless of the condition of the road surface.

The data can be sent via Bluetooth to Lufft’s Smartview software for evaluation.

Canadian company Current powered by GE, has launched a smart LED traffic signal that can help prevent the build-up of snow and ice on the lamps. The new heated shell GTx low profile lamp is equipped with sensors that measure ambient conditions and automatically activate the heating elements on the front shell to help prevent ice and snow formation on the lamp. This feature also allows for reduced energy consumption as the element is not required to be on at all times.
  • Too safe for safety’s sake

In-vehicle systems are making huge advances in vehicle safety with the introduction of ABS, collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert and blind spot warning… the list goes on. But at the same time accidents are still happening and arguably getting bigger. A look at a list of multi-vehicle (30 - 300) accidents across Europe, North and South America and parts of the Middle East shows that the trend is increasing with 2013 already having witnessed seven such incidents – three of which
