Ras Al-Khaimah, the sixth largest city in United Arab Emirates (UAE), has added 11 Tesla vehicles to its taxi fleet in a bid to improve sustainability in transport services.

Esmaeel Hasan Al Blooshi, general manager of Ras Al-Khaimah Transport Authority (Rakta) said the aim is to convert 30% of the taxi fleet into electric vehicles by 2030.

UAE president Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has designated 2023 as the "year of sustainability".

Rakta's strategy for sustainable transport 2030 is driven by the Ras Al Khaimah Energy Efficiency and Renewable Strategy 2040, which includes "strengthening the infrastructure of the various transport sectors to be sustainable, environmentally friendly, low cost and consumption, and improve air quality to reach zero emissions by 2050".

The Teslas will be available to book through the Careem-Hala app - with the regular tariffs for taxis - under a new category, Hala EV Taxi.
