Austrian traffic technology firm Swarco has launched a decarbonisation initiative to support the European Green Deal.

In all, 100 European cities - including Rotterdam, Dublin, Malmö, Dortmund, Lisbon, Paris, Milan and Krakow - are committed to becoming climate neutral by 2050 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990 by the year 2030.

Transportation accounts for 25% of greenhouse gas emissions and Swarco's GoGreen programme - launched at ITS European Congress in Lisbon - aims to help cities achieve these goals.

“Over the next 11 months, from today to Intertraffic Amsterdam in April 2024, we follow a collaborative Swarco approach to deliver an innovative experience for all Green Deal cities in Europe”, said Swarco CEO Michael Schuch.

“As a major player in ITS, we would like to formally engage with them, obtain a better understanding of their actual challenges and provide support with know-how and technology available today in overcoming such challenges.”

There is also a virtual reality (VR) experience which shows a "very realistic" urban environment, designed to help people "understand how Swarco’s offerings help tackle challenges such as air pollution, traffic congestion, micro mobility inclusion, pedestrian safety, parking space management, data-driven traffic management and modal shift", says Steve Penn, head of innovation at Swarco's ITS division.

“The VR takes into account different levels of political and technical responsibility and presents city pain points and our solutions with a little gamification in an easy-to-understand and vivid way."

The VR demo can be experienced at the ITS European Congress in the exhibition hall on the mezzanine level (stand D2) and after this week you can register for an appointment at www.swarco.com/gogreen

David Crawford welcomes a national first. Urban freight movements, while commercially and socially vital, are a growing logistical headache for planners and people alike. Figures from France’s Lyon Laboratory of Transport Economics indicate that goods transport in major urban areas accounts for: 20% of traffic; 35% of CO2 emissions made by all urban trips; and 50% of the diesel used; while final km delivery runs account for 20% of the total cost of the transport chain.

ITS needs to be sold to politicians in plainer terms and we need to be encouraging greater continuity at the policy-making level says Josef Czako, chairman of the IRF's Policy Committee on ITS. At the ITS World Congress in New York in 2008, the International Road Federation (IRF) held the inaugural meeting of its Policy Committee on ITS. The Policy Committee's formation, says its chairman, Kapsch's Josef Czako, reflects an ongoing concern over the lack of deployment of ITS technology on roads in anything li

London’s mayor Sadiq Khan has been urged to replace the city’s existing road charge schemes with a single system that charges drivers per mile. Called City Move, the scheme would apply in areas of high demand and poor air quality. Rates would vary by vehicle emissions, local levels of congestion and pollution and availability of public transport alternatives – but would be set before the journey begins.
