As part of long term efforts to tackle traffic congestion in urban centres, the 7375 Jamaican Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing, is looking to establish a modern Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to provide real-time monitoring and control of highway traffic operations, through a centralised traffic management centre (TMC).

A review of traffic congestion and road capacity has shown that congestion in urban centres island-wide has grown considerably over the last decade.

Project objectives include the real time monitoring and control of traffic signal operations; construction of real time traffic data collection system (speed, volume); construction of a national traveller advisory system; and construction of a national high speed broadband communication system.

Since the beginning of 2015, or even before, it seems obvious that all roads in vision-based ITS applications lead in one technological direction – CMOS. Initially perceived as a trend in vision technology, it has taken a step towards status as the new benchmark with Sony’s announcement to discontinue their CCD production. CMOS sensor technology has become the future for industrial

A new research report produced by the GSMA, Building Digital Societies in Asia: Making Transportation Smarter, indicates that the successful implementation of intelligent transport systems (ITS) in Thailand’s capital could reduce travel times, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and road accidents, driving social and economic benefits of up to US$1 billion per year. In addition, the case study on Bangkok’s transportation indicated that ITS can also potentially result in long-term positive changes in commuter hab

David Crawford looks how workzone safety can be ‘economically viable’. Highway maintenance is one of the most dangerous construction industry occupations in Europe. Research from The Netherlands on fatal crashes indicates that the risk facing road workzone operatives is ‘significantly higher’ than that for the general construction workforce. A survey carried out by the Highways Agency, which runs the UK’s motorway and trunk road network, has suggested that 20% of road workers have suffered injuries from pa
