Developed for use in Moto GP, the In&Motion vest provides an airbag for all motorcycle riders, which can be worn under any type of jacket and has an integrated back protector.

The vest uses a device known as the In&Box which contains embedded sensors and an algorithm which is capable of detecting a crash or an unrecoverable loss of balance; data from the sensors is analysed to inflate the airbag in under 100 milliseconds.

The vest connects to a smartphone, allowing the user to obtain data such as their speed or even GPS data; if it detects that the wearer has stopped moving, it can also call the emergency services.

David Crawford welcomes new lives for old road safety products. Traffic cones and barrels have traditionally been on the bottom shelf of the road construction and maintenance industry, typically forming visible soft safety barriers for temporary works at a lower cost than concrete alternatives. On both sides of the Atlantic, however, they are fast gaining new roles as instrumented components in advanced construction safety arrays. Guidance on the likely impact of multipath communications on connected vehicle development has been published by ITS America. ITS America’s Connected Vehicle Technical Insight looks at the challenges and opportunities wireless interoperability could provide in vehicle applications. In particular the 22-page document examines the processes by which data can be transferred from one vehicle to another (V2V), or between a vehicle and the infrastructure (V2I).
