Provider of intelligent road toll collection systems 43 Efkon has deployed its enforcement solution to assist Asfinag’s toll officers in identifying vehicles that do not comply with Austrian road tax requirements.

The technology is said to determine whether a car has a valid digital vignette without interrupting the flow of traffic. The system uses video technology and takes high-resolution images of passing vehicles from a position on the side of the roadway. Information is then passed onto Asfinag if a vehicle does not meet requirements.

All functions are combined into a single device which is designed to switch locations frequently. It can be deployed on motorways and expressways as well as their on- and off-ramps.

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is undertaking a pilot project to test the next generation of a road usage charge system designed to address funding gaps caused by a rise in fuel efficiency and a decline in gas tax revenue. Around forty volunteers have begun testing the new system, where, instead of paying the gas tax, automatically added at the pump, pilot participants will pay a per mile charge based on the number of miles they drive. The charge is roughly equal to the amount of gas tax the
