Provider of intelligent road toll collection systems 43 Efkon has deployed its enforcement solution to assist Asfinag’s toll officers in identifying vehicles that do not comply with Austrian road tax requirements.

The technology is said to determine whether a car has a valid digital vignette without interrupting the flow of traffic. The system uses video technology and takes high-resolution images of passing vehicles from a position on the side of the roadway. Information is then passed onto Asfinag if a vehicle does not meet requirements.

All functions are combined into a single device which is designed to switch locations frequently. It can be deployed on motorways and expressways as well as their on- and off-ramps.

In-vehicle anti-collision systems continue to evolve and could eliminate some incidents altogether. John Kendall rounds up the current developments. A few weeks ago, I watched a driver reverse a car from a parking bay at right angles to the road, straight into a car driving along the road. The accident happened at walking pace, no-one was hurt and both cars had body panels that regain their shape after a low speed shunt.

Colin Sowman talks to Terry Bergan of International Road Dynamics about the latest uses of weigh-in-motion systems. Raising allowable truck weight limits improve transport efficiency but leaves an ever-increasing number of bridges vulnerable to being overloaded and damaged by vehicles heavier, and in some cases far heavier, than they were designed to carry. The simplistic solution is to impose weight restrictions and erect appropriate signs - but this could have severe knock-on effect on trucking operations

If you want to get up to speed on the main issues facing the transport sector and tolling companies, ASECAP Study Days event in Ljubljana was a good place to start. Colin Sowman reports (Photographs: Louis David). Increasing populations, ever-higher technical and safety requirements, and electric and hybrid vehicles will provide both challenges and opportunities for tolling companies. The annual Study Days event organised by ASECAP (the European association for tolling companies) examined all of these aspec
