Traffic safety researchers at the 6625 Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and SLR Engineering have launched a tool that aims to evaluate the safety of pedestrian crossings and make them comparable as part of a research project. The platform is intended to be especially useful for children and adolescents making their way to school safely. Called AIT Mobility Observation Box, the solution assesses crossings to help provide a basis for targeted improvement actions and for determining where the risk to pedestrians is highest. It can also be deployed in the new planning of crossings through collecting data on pedestrians crossing the street.

The product is based on complex algorithms that measure the behaviour of each vehicle and pedestrian and captures the readiness to stop objectively and over a longer period.

Active LED solar road studs supplied by Rennicks UK have been granted a Certificate of Acceptance by the authority responsible for the UK’s railways, paving the way for the studs to be installed at level crossings around the country. Rennicks say that the road studs are an intuitive signal to pedestrians, cyclists and drivers in the approach to and crossing the track. The studs use dual LEDs with an internal prismatic system for high performance and solar/battery technology for environmental sustaina

    August 7, 2019
Aimsun has released a software platform for the large-scale design and validation of path-planning algorithms for autonomous vehicles (AVs). The company says Aimsun Auto allows test vehicles to drive inside digital cities - virtual copies of transportation networks, where users can safely explore the limits of AV technology. Paolo Rinelli, global head of product management at Aimsun, says Auto removes the need to drive around seeking conditions that users want to test or to “script each actor’s behaviou

A US pooled fund study group has developed a system of software aimed at taking the concept of winter maintenance decision support to a new level – a scientific ‘one-stop-shop’ of weather and service performance data. This report is by Charles Chambers and Benjamin Hershey. With advancements in environmental technology come new systems that assist agencies with better management of winter roadway maintenance resources. In the late 1990s the US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) began work developing a pr

Videalert’s new digital CCTV system for the enforcement of stopped vehicle offences has received Manufacturers Certification as an approved device for wide area network (WAN) deployments by the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) on behalf of the Department for Transport (DfT). This is the first system to achieve this accreditation, which makes it easy for local authorities to introduce the enforcement of illegal parking outside schools, where vehicles stop or park on zig-zag lines.
