An autonomous car operated by Uber has killed a pedestrian in what is believed to be the first death of its kind, in a report by The Independent. The vehicle, according to Tempe Police, was driving in autonomous mode as part of the company’s North America tests that included an operator behind the wheel that was not in control at the time of the incident. Uber Technologies has suspended all of its driverless car tests in Phoenix and Arizona as well as Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto.

Uber Technologies has suspended all of its driverless car tests in Phoenix and Arizona as well as Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto.
Chinese artificial intelligence company Baidu has tested two self-driving cars for the first time along a 33km section of an unused expressway in Tianjin City. A news report says that the trial helped developers collect data on the cars’ performance and their ability to sense the road environment. The test site is part of the Tangshan-Langfang expressway, which is scheduled to open in the Hebei province later this year.
Getaround is launching its car-sharing platform in the US city of Atlanta, allowing residents to earn money by making their car available to rent.
The company says the platform utilises cars already on the road and will therefore help to reduce traffic and congestion.
Each car is equipped with Getaround Connect, a proprietary technology that allows renters to locate and unlock the car using the company’s app, removing the need to meet the owner in-person for a manual key exchange. Getaround’s safety
Private ride-hailing giant Uber, which is aiming to follow rival Lyft in becoming a public company this year, has warned that it may never be profitable.
The candid admission comes in a filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as Uber prepares for an initial public offering (IPO) which it reportedly hopes will value the company at $100 billion.
This potential IPO figure is some way below the $120bn predicted by analysts just last year.
