5660 Open Roads Consulting, US provider of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), has been selected by the 6111 Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to design and implement the Next Generation Advanced Traffic Management System (Next Gen ATMS).

The project includes design, development, implementation, testing, maintenance and support for a single statewide platform to promote coordinated traffic management and operations across the state.

Open Roads will design and implement the Next Gen ATMS using its configurable and scalable OpenTMS platform which includes a browser-based graphical user interface and modules to support intelligent responses to incidents and planned events, shared control of all existing and future ITS field devices, data fusion and travel time computation, asset management, and integration with existing PennDOT, business partner and adjacent state systems.

The Open Roads team includes infrastructure company 6812 Gannett Fleming, consulting engineers 6813 Pennoni Associates, 6814 Berkeley Transportation Systems (a business unit division of 73 Iteris), engineering consultants 6815 Advantage Engineering Associates, and IT management firm 6816 Pemcco.

Barbara Skiffington, President of Open Roads, commented, “We are excited to win this prestigious project. PennDOT has been at the forefront of ITS deployments and operations so it is most gratifying to be recognised by such a progressive agency and be awarded this critical assignment. This win is a testament to the talent and the technology expertise that the Open Roads team brings to PennDOT. We look forward to partnering with PennDOT to deliver a robust and successful Next Gen ATMS.”

A major initiative in managing numerous transport networks as a single system has moved into a significant phase with design of sophisticated new ITS systems. Jon Masters reports. Detailed design work is under way on two pilot projects pursuing a common principle – that transportation can be made more efficient or effective if the various networks and modes of travel are managed as a whole system. This is the central tenet of the US Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Integrated Corridor Management (ICM)
