The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has inaugurated the new Metro Manila urban traffic signal system.  Developed and equipped by 509 Indra with the latest technology, the system’s core is Indra’s 997 Hermes smart traffic management system.

Installed in MMDA’s new command, control and communications centre, Metrobase v2.0, the system controls 85 key intersections and monitors traffic with the help of 25 video surveillance cameras installed at main points in the city.

Hermes is capable of controlling more than 500 intersections, enabling MMDA to add more signalised intersections and systems to optimise the movement of vehicles, people, goods and services and move towards smart mobility management.

According to Ertico, the future of traffic management on urban and inter-urban networks will rely on direct communication and interaction between vehicles and the infrastructure, using new technologies called cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) that support real-time exchange of traffic data. This cooperation can enable a wide range of applications such as vehicle-sourced data collection, green light and speed advice, automated hazard detection, selective vehicle priority, dynamic city logisti

Colin Sowman gets the global view on how ITS has shaped the way we travel today and what will shape the way we travel tomorrow. Over the past two decades the scope and spread of intelligent transport systems has grown and diversified to encompass all modes of travel while at the same time integrating and consolidating. Two decades ago the idea of detecting cyclists or pedestrians may have been considered impossible and why would you want to do that anyway? Today cyclists can account for a significant propor
