An 6022 ITS toolkit, developed within the 2Decide project funded by the 1690 European Commission DG Move (Mobility & Transport), is now publicly available free of charge (registration is required).

The Toolkit – funded through the EC’s 7th Framework Programme for Research & Development – covers intelligent transport systems for road and public transport applications. It can be used to search for ITS applications relevant to specific context (geographical region, area of transport, problem or policy goal). It can also be used to obtain expected values and ranges for benefits of applications (where data is available), based on evaluation reports of real deployments, or to access structured summaries of ITS deployment case studies, evaluations and full reports, where these are publicly available.

Car to car communications a step closer
Vehicle manufacturers have targeted 2015 for the first cars to roll off European assembly lines fitted with operational V2X technology. They and their partners in the Car 2 Car Communications Consortium are confident of meeting the target, reports Jon Masters. Around three years from now vehicles should be appearing in showrooms boasting the capability of communicating with each other. Manufacturers will have started fitting the first proprietary car-to-car driver-aid safety devices and deployment of ‘vehic

Slow development of Europe's road user charging
Delegates convened in Brussels for Europe’s 10th annual Road User Charging Conference in March, when both positive and negative developments came to light for advocates of more widespread introduction of RUC. Jon Masters reports. Goings on across Europe in recent months have again demonstrated how very sensitive road user charging (RUC) is politically. At the 10th annual Road User Charging Conference in Brussels at the beginning of March, a Danish delegation was notable for its absence, but Belgian governme

Wireless traffic data in real time
The effect of moving objects on the electromagnetic landscape set up by cellular telephony networks can be detected and interpreted to give real-time traffic data across large geographical areas at low cost. Here, we revisit the Celldar concept. Global economic downturn has pushed public-sector agencies, transport administrations among them, to push even harder for cost efficiencies. Unfortunately, when it comes to transport safety and efficiency the public sector often has to work up to a cost rather than

A carbon free and accident free Europe by 2015?
By 2050, the Europe Commission aims to make transport in Europe carbon- and accident-free. Between now and then, however, a significant technological development and deployment effort is needed. Here, Neelie Kroes, European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Agenda, talks about what's being done. In many respects, COOPERS, CVIS and SAFESPOT, set up by the European Commission (EC) to explore the potential of cooperative infrastructure systems, are already legacy projects. Between them, the three devel
