Funding for cycling infrastructure in Galway

Galway in Ireland is set to receive part of a US$2.5 million government transport improvement grant to develop cycle paths and other cycling infrastructure in the city and the surrounding area. Galway in Ireland is set to receive part of a US$2.5 million government transport improvement grant to develop cycle paths and other cycling infrastructure in the city and the surrounding area.

The grant will be distributed between 14 projects and, as well as money for cycling projects, other transport initiatives will receive funding. The cycling improvements will consist of new cycle paths and on-road cycle lanes, shared cycle-pedestrian facilities, crossing upgrades, increased bike parking facilities, improved signage and the promotion of cycling for leisure and tourism.

Senator Hidegarde Naughton welcomed the funding. ‘This is good news for commuters in Galway,' she said. 'Galway city’s narrow streets and footpaths lead to congestion. This funding of sustainable transport is vital to developing our tourist industry and in supporting business in Galway.’

Grant money will also be used for work in the Galway city centre area, with US$85,000 dedicated towards an overall traffic management plan. The rest of the funds will be used towards improvements to footpaths, road crossings, and laneways; improved tour and commuter bus parking at Galway Cathedral; and the upgrading of bus stops across the city.
