Traffic hotspots in 25 of the most congested cities in the US will cost drivers billions of dollars over the next ten years, according to a new report by Inrix’s cloud-based analysis tool.

Inrix’s Roadway analytics (IRA) tool ranked over 100, 000 traffic hotspots with economic cost calculated on wasted time, lost fuel and carbon emissions over the next ten years.

New York had the most traffic hotspots, costing drivers $64 billion by 2026, Los Angeles has 10 to 25 of the worst traffic hotspots in America costing drivers $91 billion. Meanwhile, the I-95 in Washington DC was the worst overall traffic hotspot, causing 1,384 traffic jams over the study period, stretching 6.47 miles and lasting an average of 33 minutes.

IRA ranked the cities depending on an impact factor, based on duration, length and frequency of traffic jams which allowed Inrix to calculate economic costs at road level and provided metric to analyse the health of transportation network within the cities and metro area.

US space agency Nasa is moving into the final phase of its four-year programme to prove that it can safely control drones flying over urban centres. Drones, less commonly called unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), are likely to form an increasing proportion of the transportation mix for future cities, but questions remain over their safety – particularly in built-up, heavily populated areas. Nasa will test them in two areas – the gambling hotspot of Reno, Nevada, and the Texan city of Corpus Christi.

The Linux Foundation has formed the Urban Computing Foundation to allow companies like Google and Uber to collaborate on open source software to improve mobility. Linux, a non-profit organisation, says the software can also be used to improve safety, traffic congestion and energy consumption in connected cities. Jim Zemlin, executive director of Linux, says: “The Urban Computing Foundation is poised to provide the compatibility tools and resources for developers to create software that can map out a

In this report, senior analyst Claire Curry has compiled the first data and shows that low-cost energy storage could be here sooner than previously thought. She projects that there will be 29 GWh of used EV batter
