US manufacturer of 4851 TMA (truck mounted attenuator) trucks Royal Truck & Equipment is to unveil the 5701 Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) autonomous attenuator truck, along with partners at Colas UK, and Micro Systems.

This work zone vehicle has been designed to revolutionise safety for roadway maintenance crews. Usually positioned behind road construction crews in order to protect workers from the travelling public, the Autonomous Impact Protection Vehicle (AIPV) is a self-driving TMA truck that increases work zone safety by removing the driver from a truck that is designed to be hit. The launch will feature a demonstration of the AIPV in action during a live roadway striping operation!

The AIPV will follow a manned maintenance vehicle (the leader vehicle). The lead vehicle transmits position, speed and direction to the impact protection truck so it can follow in the leader vehicle’s exact path. The impact protection truck will also carry radar obstacle detection systems to detect anything unusual in their path and avoid collisions.

CDOT/RoadX is looking into equipping the AIPV with a dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) radio, turning the vehicle into a mobile DSRC Roadside Unit (RSU). This will allow the truck to send real-time information about its location, speed and direction to other “connected vehicles" and the Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Data network.

The launch takes place Friday, August 18 at 1:30 p.m. MST. Royal Truck & Equipment and CDOT will live-stream the AIPV demonstration at Royal’s and CDOT’s %$Linker: 2 External <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?><dictionary /> 0 0 0 oLinkExternal Facebook page false http://facebook.com/royaltruckandequipment/&%20facebook.com/coloradodot false false%>, Royal’s %$Linker: 2 External <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?><dictionary /> 0 0 0 oLinkExternal Twitter page false http://twitter.com/RoyalTruckEquip false false%>, and %$Linker: 2 External <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?><dictionary /> 0 0 0 oLinkExternal YouTube page false http://youtube.com/cdotmedia false false%>.

Self-propelled road marking, lines or beads
Belgian company Graco, a specialist in advanced airless striping solutions, will be at Intertraffic Amsterdam 2014 to launch the LineLazer IV 250DC, which the company says is the first stand-on self-propelled striper in the market for multi-colour road markings. Modularity is one of its main advantages. A complete pressurised bead system can be added to the unit to achieve ultimate retroreflection, while the unit can also be expanded with bead tanks, bead guns and spray guns, providing more capacity and the

CTS extends contactless payments to Sydney's trains
Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) is extending Sydney’s contactless payment system beyond light rail and ferries to include the Australian city’s train network. The technology allows commuters to pay for ticketing via credit cards, smart watches and other electronic devices, alongside the Opal card. CTS’s Asia-Pacific team and Transport for New South Wales initially made the contactless system available for the city’s Manly ferry service in 2017. In March this year, the contactless system was ext

Bristol advances towards 2050 emissions target
Bristol City Council will install 120 electric vehicle (EV) charge points and convert part of its fleet to electric in a bid to become carbon neutral by 2050. The UK council also intends to transition at least 10% of its vehicles to electric by 2021. The scheme will take place across the West of England and is being funded by £2m grant provided by the Office of Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) through the Go Ultra Low West project.
