Ertico organised a second eCall Testfest
374 Ertico – ITS Europe and communications standards body ETSI have staged the second eCall Testfest event where vendors tested the interoperability of their eCall systems. The week-long event was staged at CETECOM in Essen, Germany, and attracted more than 30 vendors – both in-vehicle and public safety answering point (PSAP) suppliers - from all over the world.

During the event 350 pairing sessions were organised each of which allowed one in-vehicle unit to test with one PSAP unit. Over the course of the event 4,000 of the two hour long tests were carried out which showed an overall interoperability level of more than 93% which Ertico says showed that eCall is nearing its deployment.

By automatically alerting the authorities to an accident and pinpointing the location, eCall is expected to cut emergency services' response time by 50% in rural and 40% in urban areas which in turn is expected to save several hundred lives each year in the EU.

Highway construction zone safety is taken seriously enough in the US to merit a special spring National Work Zone Awareness Week, which in 2010 ran from 19-23 April. Headed by the US Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), this aims to reduce an annual toll of work zone deaths - 720 in 2008 (an average of one every 10 hours) with more than 40,000 traffic injuries (an average of one every 13 minutes).
