US wireless solutions provider 8062 Intuicom, in conjunction with its distributor Twincrest Technologies, is to provide the wireless traffic communications for the City of Austin’s Traffic Signal Expansion Initiative, replacing the city’s old fibre system.

The system utilises Intuicom’s BroadBand Solutions (BBS) radios, augmented by the company’s EB-6 PLUS high-speed wireless transceivers providing Ethernet connectivity where line of sight is an issue. The combination ensures that the Austin Transportation Department (ATD) has reliable and secure high speed data communications connecting all the city’s intersections. This scalable wireless solution integrates the City of Austin’s IP-based traffic signal controllers while providing centralised monitoring and management of the entire traffic network from the City’s Traffic Management Center.

Field trials under way in Arizona promise eradication of accidents between emergency vehicles at intersections – as part of a national focus on ‘intelligent signal’ infrastructure.
