US wireless solutions provider 8062 Intuicom, in conjunction with its distributor Twincrest Technologies, is to provide the wireless traffic communications for the City of Austin’s Traffic Signal Expansion Initiative, replacing the city’s old fibre system.

The system utilises Intuicom’s BroadBand Solutions (BBS) radios, augmented by the company’s EB-6 PLUS high-speed wireless transceivers providing Ethernet connectivity where line of sight is an issue. The combination ensures that the Austin Transportation Department (ATD) has reliable and secure high speed data communications connecting all the city’s intersections. This scalable wireless solution integrates the City of Austin’s IP-based traffic signal controllers while providing centralised monitoring and management of the entire traffic network from the City’s Traffic Management Center.

Just a short time ago, that could have been a quote from a high-level policy document but with the first arrivals of vehicles with 802.11p connectivity – the door-opener to Vehicle-to-X (V2X) applications – it’s a statement which has increasing validity. The technology which uses our roads will also provide information on road conditions but V2X isn’t the only

In the UK, the necessary radio spectrum has been identified and standardised technology developed to allow cost effective wireless communication between cars, devices and other ‘machines’. This by Professor William Webb. A world free of traffic congestion, with intelligent systems directing vehicles and alerting drivers to free parking spaces may sound a far off fantasy to motorists stuck in seemingly endless queues on the outskirts of London. Yet this is a scenario not confined to the world of science fict

RuggedCom is using its appearance at the ITS America Annual Meeting to highlight a range of field-hardened communications products for ITS. As the company points out, creating a reliable, city-wide communication network to meet the demand for real-time information and support the growing need for mobility is no easy feat. But its solution can ease the pain: WiMax 4G broadband can cost-effectively extend the network and seamlessly integrate into existing infrastructure.
