The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) integrated corridor management (ICM) system on Interstate 15 in San Diego, California, has just received the California Transportation Foundation award for Operational Efficiency Program, for the second time in three years.

This ICM project centres around a decision support system, for which TSS provides the 7320 Aimsun Online modelling tool.

Thanks in part to the success of the ICM system, in 2015 USDOT added the SANDAG ICM network to the Dynamic Mobility Applications (DMA) Active Transportation and Demand Management (ATDM) Analysis, Modelling and Simulation (AMS) Testbed Project. This enables SANDAG to develop the tools needed to model both the communications and functionality of connected vehicles within the platform, including intelligent network flow optimisation and cooperative adaptive cruise control.

The system has been running in an automated state since March 2014, taking automatic control of signals and ramps when recommended by the simulated evaluations. The most recent update is the introduction of 40 alternate route signs along the arterials to guide drivers through the surface streets from and to the highway during a diversion.

Construction starts on first section of San Diego’s downtown cycle path
Construction has started on the first phase of San Diego’s Downtown Mobility Plan to help improve safety for cyclists and scooter riders. The 9.3 mile section will feature two-way cycle tracks on major arteries and help provide safer passage from Balboa Park to the San Diego Convention Center. It will be painted green and be separated from vehicular traffic by parked cars, flex posts or grade variations. City mayor Kevin Faulconer says connecting popular destinations in downtown to surrounding neighbour

Temporary traffic monitoring with Bluetooth and wi-fi
David Crawford reviews developments in temporary ITS. Widespread take-up of technologies such as Bluetooth and wi-fi are encouraging the emergence of more sophisticated, while still cost effective, ITS responses to the traffic issues posed by temporary road situations such as work zones and special events. Andy Graham of traffic solutions specialists White Willow Consulting says: “A machine-to-machine radio link is far easier and cheaper than reading characters on a plate.” There can be other plusses. Success of ITS Belgium's annual congress
In October, ITS Belgium staged its most successful annual congress to date. However, as Stijn Van Cauwenberge outlines, the association is not going to rest on its laurels in 2008. This last year has been an important one for ITS Belgium. That may seem like a cliché. However, with Peter Van der Perre being appointed as Managing Director of ITS Belgium almost one year ago (after a career with Ertico - ITS Europe for the past 10 years); a first commercial spin-off; a successful ITS Congress; and a number of a

European tunnel safety steps up a gear
David Crawford reviews the latest safety systems installed in European tunnels. Blueprints for the safer road tunnels of the future are emerging fast as European operators invest in technologies to enhance travellers’ prospects of surviving an accident. Central to modern emergency planning is the principle that, following an incident, drivers should be enabled to rescue themselves and their passengers with the aid of prompt and correct identification and communication of the hazard.
