Access to transport services is a key issue in North America, and StreetLight has released a guide which seeks to give transport agencies data to improve this.

Demographic information in the Transportation Equity Guidebook covers socio-economic and racial disparities and is designed to enable the creation of more equitable transportation for people from multiple groups and communities.

"A demographic lens on transportation behaviour is the key tool for building equity into planning," the company, formerly known as StreetLight Data, says.

The guide shows how information can be used to conduct an equity analysis and prioritise infrastructure that benefits disadvantaged communities: examples include whether long commute times for lower-income families justify a new bus line; or if multilingual signage should be added for non-English speakers.

The guide will also look at how funds can be unlocked from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and offers an "example equity analysis of travel patterns to Philadelphia’s regional rail network".
