Thales has provided public transit network Brescia Metro with a train-to-ground data communication solution, which includes an integrated CCTV encoder for digitising analogue video signals.

The solution also features a Wi-Fi link connecting the train to the ground through on-board equipment and trackside access-points and a dedicated data network to connect the Wi-Fi access-point to the operations control centre.

As part of the deal in the Italian city, Thales is providing the control centre with a software platform for video surveillance and diagnostics purposes.

Thales says the new broadband communication system installed across the metro network allows near real-time transmission of image data from on-board CCTV cameras to the control centre and the capacity to share this video content with other security operators.

The level of passenger security on board trains will therefore “dramatically improve”, the company adds.

The Brescia Metro covers 17 stations plus one depot, 14km of route, with a fleet of 18 trains and serves the urban area by connecting the city from north to south.

Carlo Piacenza, transportation domain director at Thales Italia, says: “Thales confirms its role as a trusted partner in the sustainable digitalisation transformation of its customers, a process aimed not only at achieving safe and intelligent mobility, but also at reducing the environmental impact of the city.”

Completion of the work is scheduled for February 2022.
