GMV is to install its railway fleet management system (SAE-R) on Trambaix and Trambesòs trams in Barcelona on behalf of Alstom.

Trambaix runs from the metropolitan area of Barcelona to the Baix Llobregat county to the cities of Sant Joan Despí and Sant Feliu de Llobregat. It has 23 trams running on the T1, T2 and T3 lines along 14,900 km.

Trambesòs links up the municipalities of Badalona and Sant Adrià de Besòs. The service consists of 18 trams operating on the T4, T5 and T6 lines along 14,300 km.

GMV says its SAE-R meets the requirements of tram operators and provides passengers with real-time information.

It uses a GPS tracking system in conjunction with an odometer and trackside balises together with data transmission by the Tetra communications system.

This keeps operators in touch with the whereabouts of rolling stock and personnel, and maps any incidents on GIS (geographical information system) cartography, the company adds.

The fleet management system is rounded out with passenger information functions, shown on inside information panels, at covered tram stops or stations plus web facilities and apps.

Each cab will feature a GMV control unit and human-machine interface (HMI) to facilitate interaction between the driver, control centre personnel and passengers.

The project will establish a train control and monitoring system for receiving technical alarms and a radio system to provide coverage inside tunnels, on platforms and in stations.

Additionally, the control centre will be fitted with a redundant virtualised server system to unify management of both lines, including interfaces with the driver and timetabling system, with the tram-stop passenger information panels and the Tetra communications system.

According to Ingo Flomer, director of Product Management of UK company Axell Wireless, UK transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin’s intention to upgrade the rail network to enable passengers to access high-speed mobile broadband does not go far enough to promote an integrated communications infrastructure that supports cellular (3G and 4G) coverage on-board trains. Flomer says the UK has significant technological hurdles to overcome to connect rail passengers to the cellular network. The coverage would ha
