Baidu to develop China 5G driving project 

Baidu plans to build an intelligent connected vehicle demo zone in Chengdu

Baidu Apollo is to jointly construct a 5G intelligent driving project in the Chinese city of Chengdu, Sichuan province, as part of a ¥105 million (£11.5 million) deal. 

The company is to develop 30km of intelligent connected demonstration roads in the Singapore-Sichuan Hi-Tech Innovation Park.

Investors in the integrated urban hi-tech innovation park project include Singapore and Sichuan Province.

The company also plans to build a 5G-based intelligent connected vehicle (CV) demonstration zone that will support research and development testing as well as future commercial applications.

Once the project is completed, Baidu wants to launch autonomous vehicle (AV) services to Chengdu residents, including robobuses and robotaxis and create a range of smart transportation applications.

Baidu is to work with Sichuan Beizhi Digital Energy Information Engineering and China Telecom Consulting and Design Institute.

The partners are carrying out the project on behalf of the Chengdu Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone.

In 2006, the zone was listed as the pilot in China's efforts in building high-tech parks and zones by the Ministry of Science and Technology. 

It supports the development of 5G and artificial intelligence industries within the Singapore-Sichuan Hi-Tech Innovation Park, focusing on areas such as smart transportation. 

Looking ahead, Baidu is to utilise Vehicle to Everything (V2X) technology to accelerate the construction of an intelligent driving demonstration zone in Chengdu Hi-tech Zone.
