Sernis illuminates pedestrian crossings

GHSA says night-time pedestrian fatalities grew by 54% between 2010-19

Sernis has unveiled a road stud which it says makes pedestrian crossings and the people using them at night more noticeable to drivers. 

The Governors Highway Safety Association's (GHSA) 2020 Preliminary Data revealed that pedestrian deaths are on the rise, with the number of night-time fatalities growing by 54% from 2010-19, compared to a 16% increase in daytime fatalities. 

However, research from ScienceDirect has found that increased illumination intensity at pedestrian crossings has been linked to a substantial reduction in night time pedestrian collisions.

The SR-CrossLED-S stud must be installed in all the tops of the white cross lines to create a homogeneous illumination of the pedestrian crossing. 

According to Sernis, the large lighted area has “great visual impact”, making it almost impossible for oncoming drivers to overlook them.

The high strength stainless steel structure allows it to be used in any type of traffic application, the company adds. 

Additionally, the anti-skidding treatment on the surface is expected to prevent slipping accidents from motorcycles and bikes.

The wired system can be powered by electric or solar energy and also comes with a low power consumption. 

A standard version comes with white LEDs, but it can also have red and green LEDs that are connected to traffic lights.
