The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a contractor to install an intelligent transportation system in an 18-month project with an estimated value between $8-9 million.

The system is expected to make commuting safer, more predictable and efficient.

The project proposes a total of six dynamic message signs (DMS) and 15 CCTV cameras along the Dulles Toll Road (DTR) and new infrastructure to support the ITS.

This equipment will connect into the existing fibre optic line that runs to the MWAA Administration Building.

Improvements to support the ITS will be installed along the DTR corridor between its eastern limit at the main toll plaza near I-495 and its western limit at Route 28 near the Washington Dulles International Airport.

As part of the project, the contractor shall furnish all necessary labour, materials, tools, equipment and supervision for the deployment of the system.

Additionally, the project requires that a quarter of the work is carried out by contractors within a 100-mile radius.

Submissions must be made by 10 September.

The proposed technology has also proven popular elsewhere in the US. In June, McCain's DMS won the California Transportation Foundation's Advanced Technology Program / Project of the Year Award for 2020.
