Iteris is to carry out traffic signal timing improvements at four counties in New Jersey as part of a contract with a potential value of $1.5 million.

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission's traffic signal timing programme is seeking to improve safety and mobility for the region's travelling public and freight operators.

As part of the initiative, Iteris is to identify cost-effective traffic signal re-timing techniques to pre-evaluate corridors throughout the counties of Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Mercer.

The company will also analyse signal timings, recommend improvements, implement timing revisions, refine timing adjustments and report on performance throughout the programme.

The project is expected to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and fuel consumption by reducing delays and stops on key corridors for passenger vehicles and heavy vehicles.

According to Iteris, this in turn will contribute to environmental and air quality improvements.

Jeff Gerken, regional vice president, consulting solutions at Iteris, says: “This traffic signal timing programme represents the continued expansion of Iteris’ specialised consulting services in the Eastern US, and will ultimately help to increase safety and mobility for the region’s travelling public and freight operators, while also improving air quality and reducing fuel consumption.”
