5725 ABI Research’s Intelligent Transportation Systems vendor Competitive Assessment analysed fifteen leading intelligent transportation systems vendors against six “innovation” and seven “implementation” criteria in addition to a market share analysis.

The analysis ranks 81 Kapsch TraffiCom first, saying it performed strongly across hardware, software, and solutions and excelling in toll collect and road use charging, traffic data, monitoring, and management, road and vehicle safety systems, and hardware. In second place was 189 Siemens, excelling in regional coverage, traffic management, software and middleware, and big data. 2213 Hitachi took third place, scoring high on quality and reliability, multi-modal mobility, and smart cities integration, as well as combining hardware, services, and IT expertise.

“As the ITS market is still in an early stage, many vendors have been preparing for this market taking off by designing solutions and participating in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) trials while also anticipating possible mandates. As a consequence, in this ranking, readiness has been used as an important guideline in scoring vendors against the different criteria,” says vice-president and practice director Dominique Bonte.

The overall intelligent transportation systems vendor ecosystem can be divided into three categories:

•    Solution providers: Kapsch, 129 Swarco, 108 Q-Free, Siemens, 3264 PTV Group, Hitachi, 1692 TomTom
•    Hardware providers: Kapsch, 4306 Denso Corporation, 311 Bosch, Hitachi, 260 Continental
•    IT vendors: 62 IBM, Siemens, 1028 Cisco, 86 Logica, 4186 Xerox

According to ABI, few companies offer the full range of ITS hardware, software, and solutions, with Hitachi coming closest, followed by Siemens and Kapsch, explaining their top rankings. IT players are prominently present leveraging their software and big data expertise which will become increasingly important components of ITS solutions in the future. Automotive Tier1 suppliers Denso, Bosch, and Continental are mainly focused on V2V hardware components.

This Competitive Assessment provides a rating of fifteen leading Intelligent Transportation Systems vendors which were analysed against six “innovation” and seven “implementation” criteria in addition to a market share analysis. These findings are part of ABI Research’s Intelligent Transportation Systems and Automotive Technologies Research Services.
