US–headquartered 73 Iteris has increased its Vantage video detection product suite with two new products, SmartCycle and SmartSpan.

SmartCycle accurately detects vehicles and cycles with a single video detection camera facing a dedicated approach. Transportation agencies can now benefit from cycle-specific virtual detection zones that can be placed anywhere within the approaching traffic lanes.

“SmartCycle provides traffic engineers with a cost-effective way to bring their traffic management systems into compliance with new regulations that require bicycle detection,” says Abbas Mohaddes, president and CEO of Iteris.

SmartSpan enables traffic management agencies to cost-effectively deploy video vehicle detection. SmartSpan uses proprietary Dynamic Zone Stabilisation (DZS) algorithms to provide accurate advance detection and stop-bar detection of vehicles at intersections equipped with span wire mounted signal lights.

“SmartSpan offers traffic engineers a seamless way to combine the benefits of video vehicle detection, traffic data collection, and intersection surveillance for span wire equipped intersections.” says Mohaddes.

The adaptation of machine vision to transport applications continues apace. That the machine vision industry is taking traffic installations seriously is evident by the amount of hardware and software products tailor-made for ITS applications that are now available on the market. A good example comes from US-based Gridsmart Technologies which has developed a single wire fisheye camera that provides a horizon to horizon view for use at intersections. Not only does the single camera replace four or more in a

Iteris has received an order for US$706,000 from Comet Electric to provide video detection systems and related communication equipment for the Omnitrans sbX Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. The Vantage video detection systems will cover a 22.25km corridor across San Bernardino and Loma Linda, California. The multi-agency sbX project is the beginning of an intermodal public transit system in California’s San Bernardino Valley that aims to reduce vehicle congestion and provide the public with a cost effective
