Navtech says ClearWay CTS350-X is suitable for AID in tunnels, bridges and strategic roads. It delivers a cost effective coverage of road surface up to 1000 metres, with a response time between detection of a stopped vehicle and alarm of less than 10-15 seconds. The device’s typical mounting height provides visibility of objects both close to and far from the radar and a range of up to 350 metre radius for detection of a person (700 metres total) and 500 metre radius to detect a vehicle (1000 metres total).

The longest road tunnel in Europe will be built along the new 65 kilometre stretch of the Struma highway in Bulgaria. Two tunnels, totalling almost 37 kilometres, will be built underneath the Kresna gorge between the towns of Blagoevgrad and Sandanski. The 150 kilometre Struma highway runs from the village of Daskalovo to the Greek border and is part of the Pan-European Transport Corridor IV and the Trans-European North-South Highway. The tunnels are required for environmental reasons and will be

Hybrid communications to variable message signs increase resilience to natural disasters and enable deployment in remote areas, as Alan Allegretto explains. Variable Message Signs (VMSs) are a common sight and a well-proven means to improve public safety on our roads and highways. ITS professionals rank the VMS as second only to interoperable radios as the most important technology to improve effectiveness during emergency incidents and evacuations. Ironically, however, current systems suffer from one criti
