Making cycling safer in Bournemouth

Cyclists using a busy intersection in Bournemouth, UK, are benefiting from an in-road cycle detection solution installed at the traffic signals.  The intersection joins a major route into the city centre and experiences high traffic flows throughout the day.

A designated cycle lane was installed along with an advanced stop line and an M100BR bicycle detection system supplied by 557 Clearview Traffic. The M100BR works in conjunction with the traffic signals to detect cyclists approaching the junction.  When a cyclist is detected in the designated area, a demand call is generated at the traffic signal control system, providing priority to join the main road.

The M100BR has been designed to detect the presence of a bicycle within a defined zone and differentiate it from other forms of traffic.  It uses the same wireless communications infrastructure and protocols as the popular M100 wireless vehicle detection system and is easily retrofitted at junctions where the M100 system is already deployed.

    Iteris enhances SmartCycle cycle detection
Iteris has released a third generation SmartCycle cycle detection and differentiation algorithm for its Vantage video detection platform. SmartCycle provides the unique capability of distinguishing cycles from other vehicles across all lanes of traffic. When a cycle is detected at an intersection, the system extends the green light for that phase, ensuring the cyclist is able to safely cross the intersection. This new generation enhances the accuracy and capabilities of the system to detect and diff

Iteris introduces SmartCycle and Vantage Vector Hybrid
Iteris is using Intertraffic to introduce two important safety innovations. The first is a new video-based bicycle detection system, SmartCycle, which the company says has the unique capability of distinguishing bicycles from other vehicles on the road in any lane. This process provides a special output that is sent to the traffic controller to extend the green time when bicycles are detected, allowing them to safely cross the intersection before the light changes. “Cycling is a way of life in Amsterd

Copenhagen to showcase ITS in action at ITSWC 2018
As delegates head for the 2017 ITS World Congress in Montreal, we talk to Copenhagen mayor Morten Kabell about why his city is the ideal location for next year’s event. It may have been a long time coming but the ITS World Congress will be in Copenhagen in 2018 and there can be few more fitting places to host the event. By any number of metrics - interconnected transport, cycle commuting, safer streets, reduced pollution, sustainable energy and quality of life - the Danish capital has implemented what m
