Autotalks has joined a project whose members include Renault, Honda and Continental to show how Vehicle to Everything (V2X) communications can improve road safety.

The Secur (Safety Enhancement through Connected Users on the Road) project is to define the V2X test procedure that will serve as the basis for the new safety rating by European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) in 2025.

Euro NCAP is a voluntary vehicle safety rating system created by the Swedish Road Administration, Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile and International Consumer Research & Testing.

Results from Secur’s two-year research period will be made public and be integrated into the Euro NCAP 2025 roadmap.

Autotalks founder Onn Haran says: “We believe our decade of experience with V2X technology can serve as a tremendous contribution in defining the standard for the industry."

The acceleration of V2X deployment, combined with the NCAP stamp of approval, will lead to V2X being installed in every new car, Haran adds.

The connected future throws up a number of enticing possibilities for us all. But, says Houman Zarrinkoub of MathWorks, issues around visualisation, prototyping and model evolution need to be examined carefully. We are all aware of the huge amount of investment going into driverless car technologies. With the likes of Volvo, Tesla and BMW getting in on the act, soon they will be a common sight on our roads. However, for this to occur, the vehicles must be able to connect with each other and ensure driver
