Monotch & Detecon to help 5G transport roll-out in EU

5GMEC4EU project aims to boost 5G take-up along major European transportation routes

Monotch and Detecon have jointly won a contract to coordinate and support the rollout of 5G among European Union countries.

The companies will offer a comprehensive package encompassing information, local engagement and advisory services to boost the take-up of 5G along major transportation routes and within local communities.

Monotch, a major player in the international market for cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS), will develop mobility use cases for 5G corridors and 5G smart communities. 

The €2 million, 30-month contract was awarded by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Digital) — the European Commission’s funding instrument for infrastructure projects that foster connectivity among EU member states.

The 5G rollout project, provisionally titled 5GMEC4EU, aims to support and enhance 5G edge and distributed cloud integration for European 5G corridors and 5G smart communities. 

The primary objective is the assurance of service continuity and the interoperability of 5G across European Union transportation grids. This should enhance road safety standards and enable the digitalisation of local communities.

The work incorporates a broad range activities, from research and requirements assessment to proof-of-concept testing and piloting to outreach, engagement and advisory services.

German management and technology consultancy Detecon will handle project coordination, outreach and community management and facilitate the integration of the projects into the European multi-access edge computing (MEC) infrastructure.

Monotch and Detecon will also collaborate closely with other CEF-funded 5G deployment projects focused on harmonising European federated cloud infrastructure efforts.

Achievement of the first phase— an initial in-depth analysis and evaluation of MEC deployment in the European Union — is expected within six months.

Later phases will see the initiation of the first mobility use cases and the development and conduct of best practices for their integration into existing edge infrastructures.

“This project will have a significant impact on our endeavours to establish unified pan-European 5G and edge cloud services,” says Dimitri Jungblut, project coordinator for the 5GMEC4EU activities at Detecon. “In seamlessly integrating roads, railroads and communities, we are creating a truly unified, inclusive, and advanced European network for the next generation.”

Paul Potters, Monotch director smart mobility, said Monotch’s platform - Traffic Live Exchange (TLEX) - provides the structure that mobility services require for operation across geographical borders, whether urban, regional, or national: "Bi-directional and real-time mobility data exchange in conjunction with 5G edge solutions heightens operational reliability even further.”

TLEX connects roadside equipment to service providers, the automotive industry, road authorities and road users. All of these connections are bi-directional, continuous, real-time and vendor-independent.
