Cox Communications is trialling two digital kiosks in a kerbside management pilot in Las Vegas aimed at reducing downtown congestion.

The US company provides digital cable television, telecommunications and home automation services, and its kiosks cover six parking spaces along the pavement adjacent to the 100 block of Main Street.

Cox says the kiosks utilise video analytics and smart parking technology to better manage active kerb loading zones for taxis and ride-shares.

Video analytics from devices along the kerb will capture vehicle and number plate information and send utilisation data to the kiosks to kick off a countdown timer, the company adds.

If a vehicle remains in the loading zone after the countdown ends, the system reports the incident to the city to help ensure a constant flow of traffic.

On the back-end, the Cox platform provides cloud processing of traffic flow information, an on-screen interface to display vehicle information and an online portal to report traffic flows and pedestrian counts.

Las Vegas mayor Carolyn Goodman says: "We appreciate Cox for their out of the box thinking and assistance as we work together to ease traffic congestion in our downtown. It's ideas like this one that will move our city into the future."

As part of the pilot, Cox Media is to explore the placement of advertisements on the kiosks and how that can provide local businesses with presence in the downtown area.

Tonya Ruby, vice president at Cox Media Las Vegas, says: “Cox Media is all about finding solutions for local businesses and these kiosks are another way we can deliver relevant messages to residents and visitors."
