Greek capital Athens has installed 830 smart sensors at road crossing and pedestrian ramps in a bid to tackle anti-social and illegal parking.

The city's technology unit DAEM designed the smart deterrence system in collaboration with the Athens Municipal Police.

The location of each sensor is transmitted to a central platform and displayed on a map accessible to the police. The platform shows the status of the sensors, indicating whether the passage or ramp is blocked by a vehicle.

The operations centre receives information in real time and officers located within 500m of the sensor are notified through a mobile device. The collected data is expected to help the police administration to more effectively organise the distribution of its personnel in the centre and neighbourhoods of Athens.

These sensors are installed between Omonia and Syntagma Squares, along Alexandras Avenue, and in the Kolonaki, Koukaki and Pangrati neighbourhoods.

Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis says: “By installing sensors on the crossings and ramps, we seek to put an end to anti-social parking, to the indifference and lack of respect towards people with disabilities, the elderly, and parents with children."

“This is the largest parking deterrence program ever implemented in the country. It is a valuable tool that strengthens our efforts to ensure accessibility and helps to transform Athens into a sustainable and functional city: a city without obstacles and barriers that offers equal opportunities to all.”

Each year in Chicago there are around 3,000 incidents of pedestrians being struck by a motor vehicle - and about 800 of those casualties are children. In an effort to improve child safety the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) has established Children’s Safety Zones around schools and other areas where children congregate.
