5243 Smart Signal Technologies has launched what it claims is a remarkable new product that will save taxpayers millions of dollars annually as it improves traffic signal performance along the congested signalised arterial corridors. The product, a compact device with powerful data collection and communication features, permits the gathering of high resolution data for processing into actionable real-time information to measure and monitor signal and corridor performance.

Using unique AdaptiTrol technology licensed from the 584 University of Minnesota, the company says the device costs a fraction of the cost of new controllers that are used to regulate phase changes at signalised intersections. It is NEMA compliant and is compatible with all 170/2070 and TS-1 and TS-2 controller cabinets.

Communications hold key to expanding ITS wireless network expansion
Wireless transmission of data and control information is making smarter traffic management easier and cheaper to install. It has long been known that connectivity is the key to improving traffic management and many cost-benefit studies prove that investment in new technology can be justified in terms of reduced congestion, shorter travel times, improved safety and air quality. However, many authorities’ cap-ex budgets only cover urgent matters, not improvements, making it difficult, if not impossible to

Latest intersection control software from McCain
US-based McCain has released the latest upgrade to its Omni eX intersection control software, which the company says expands traffic operations and communication capabilities. Usability improvements allow users to intuitively modify the entire database of timing parameters directly from the controller front panel. In addition, extra security features enable agencies to limit and track user access through unique logins and passwords. The latest version offers transportation agencies an even more powerful

High-res traffic data provides planners with the big picture
Road authorities have a lot to gain from high-resolution traffic data, argues Pravin Varaiya. Traffic engineers have traditionally been forced to operate with limited data regarding the performance of their arterials. Traffic studies are often commissioned once every three years, over a few days, to get an updated estimate of utilization.
