PTV Vissim microsimulation software generates a digital replica of a transport network

PTV Group and Econolite have continued their coming together under the Umovity brand by embedding Econolite’s next-generation advanced traffic controller software, EOS, into traffic simulation software PTV Vissim.

The companies say this means users "can now evaluate and optimise intersection performance with increased accuracy and advanced functionality, enabling them to make data-based decisions for a smoother and safer traffic flow".

“Integrating Econolite’s EOS, one of the most advanced traffic controller software solutions available, with PTV Vissim is another significant milestone for Umovity," said Christian U. Haas, CEO of Umovity.

“This controller provides traffic engineers the ability to create very advanced signal operations logic to ensure the highest traffic operations performance even in complex settings. And through test and evaluation in Vissim, you can easily gain transparency and quantify the impact of different possible strategies for all road users to find the optimum solution. This is a benefit for all PTV Vissim and all EOS users and everybody who drives, rides or walks in locations where the signal programs are rolled out.”

PTV Vissim microsimulation software generates a digital replica of a transport network, including all road users.

It incorporates diverse stage-based and ring-barrier controller software for traffic signal control, which enables planners to look at traffic signal operations and test different scenarios to see how changes - such as increased green-time for public transit vehicles - would affect other road users.

The firms say EOS provides the operational benefits of adaptive split optimisation without the need for a separate central system, and these features can now be precisely mapped and verified in PTV Vissim.

    Developments in software visualisation packages
Adrian Greeman looks at developments in software visualisation packages. The capacity to make visualisations has been growing in importance over the last decade, and is now a well-accepted part of consultations and client presentations. But making high-quality images of projects is still a major undertaking and larger consultancies employ specialist departments to do so. Costs are coming down but it can still take a while, and some high-capacity hardware, to produce realistic renderings from drawings and 3D

PTV Group supports UK CAV project
German transportation modelling specialist PTV Group is working with UK consultants Atkins on a project commissioned by the UK Department for Transport which looks to simulate the potential impacts connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) may have on traffic flow and capacity of the UK road network. The project uses PTV’s Vissim 8 software which enables users to create a virtual testing environment and simulate all modes of transport, illustrating their motion characteristics and mutual interaction.
