Weigh in Motion (WiM) specialist Intercomp has begun targeting some of its weight and balance products at the driverless trucking sector, recommending several scale lines for measuring autonomous trucks, including the LS630-WIM portable WiM Scale hybrid system.

Intercomp also says its P788 Low Profile Scale features the same benefits as standard portable truck scales, with a lower overall height, making it easier to drive onto the scale.

The in-ground LS-WIM Low-Speed WiM Axle Scale saves operators time by keeping traffic moving while accurately capturing weight-related data, the manufacturer says.

Finally, the LTR788 Dual Wheel Load Scale is a recently-developed product created for direct measurement of individual tyre loading in a dual-tyre configuration.

Intercomp adds that it utilises highly accurate strain gauge load sensing technology "which is widely accepted as the most accurate and reliable means to weigh a vehicle".

Weigh in motion technology aids overweight vehicle reduction
Innovative use of truck weighing technology is growing as strategies aimed at reducing numbers of overweight vehicles gather momentum. Business is generally good at present in the truck weighing sector in general, and weigh-in-motion (WIM) technology in particular, according to leading suppliers of systems serving to help reduce overloading. Strategies aimed at deterring excessive truck loading – cutting damage to road networks and risks to safety – vary considerably worldwide, with some governments draggin

Intercomp showcases high speed WIM sensors
Intercomp Company is showcasing its strip sensor product line for High-Speed Weigh-In-Motion (HSWIM) in-road installations this year at the 2015 ITS World Congress. The sensors utilise strain gauge technology for durable, stable, and accurate data collection of vehicle weight data at a variety of speeds. Capable of ASTM 1318 Type III, or COST A(5) performance, the sensor systems provide data including the wheel weight, axle weight, gross vehicle weight (GVW), vehicle configuration and speed. IRD complements WIM with tyre under-inflation detection
To complement its existing WIM offering, IRD has introduced a system to detect under-inflated and flat tyres at highway speeds. Tyre inflation pressure has both safety and economic impacts for road users and none more so than with commercial vehicles. An underinflated tyre has decreased directional control, increased risk of catastrophic failure, and negatively impacts tyre life and fuel economy. In June 2014 the USDOT published Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts 2012 in which the Federal Motor Carrier Safety

Weigh-in-motion scales aid container terminal efficiency
Intercomp weigh-in-motion (WIM) scale systems have been installed for use in the lanes at the West Basin Container Terminal (WBCT) within the Port in Long Beach, California, to automate the weighing process and replacing the older static truck scales. Intercomp’s LS-WIM weigh-in-motion systems feature industry-leading strain gauge load cell technology, the same type used in static truck scales for increased accuracy, repeatability and fast response times. The small footprint of the scales compared to
