Redflex is to provide 50 of its Radarcam automated speed enforcement systems to improve safety for children walking to and from school in the city of Brampton, Ontario.

The firm says the deployment more than doubles the Canadian province's network of school and community safety zone speed enforcement systems since it first won a bid in Toronto in 2019 for 50 systems.

According to Redflex, several other jurisdictions within Ontario have also joined Brampton and Toronto, including Durham, Hamilton, Ottawa, Peel and York.

Ontario has a population of more than 13 million, including more than two million school-age children.

The Redflex solution can be rotated to different school and community safety zones, with the majority battery-operated. This provides municipalities with the flexibility to enforce speeds in different areas, the company adds.

Radarcam is a self-contained measurement and capture device designed for in-vehicle, tripod, trailer or semi-fixed mounting. The system’s dual radar technology is expected to provide detection accuracy across up to six lanes of approaching or receding traffic.

It uses two different radar devices to enable cross-checking of measured data to achieve certainty of detection while also eliminating radar anomalies.

The deployment comes less than six months after an initial agreement to deploy five Redflex systems in Brampton.

Earlier this month, Redflex confirmed plans to upgrade 113 automated enforcement camera sites throughout Los Angeles to help improve safety at bus and rail crossings.

Chicago is installing automated enforcement after pilot schemes indicated that one in 10 motorists exceed the speed limits in Children’s Safety Zones. Each year in Chicago there are around 3,000 incidents of pedestrians being struck by a motor vehicle - and about 800 of those casualties are children. In an effort to improve child safety the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) has established Children’s Safety Zones around schools and other areas where children congregate. These zones allow the impos
