International Road Dynamics (IRD) has been awarded a $3.3 million commercial vehicle enforcement systems contract in Ukraine.

As part of its partnership with Ukraine-based SEA Electronics, IRD will provide high-speed virtual Weigh in Motion (WiM) systems for six sites in the country.

These will provide commercial vehicle enforcement, traffic monitoring and reporting capability through a web-based application.

SEA supplies and manufactures electrical equipment, including traffic control systems.

The two companies recently deployed a WiM pilot project for Ukraine's road agency, Ukravtodor, at six sites - and revealed that over 40% of commercial vehicles were overloaded.

SEA will be installing six additional virtual WiM sites for Ukraine's infrastructure funding body, FinInPro, using IRD's WiM systems and virtual weigh station software for vehicle monitoring and enforcement on 16 traffic lanes.

The software provides real-time and historical data including vehicle weight, overview images, licence plate numbers and dimensions.

The system will also be equipped with a wrong-way detection feature.

IRD CEO Rish Malhotra said the deal "will assist Ukraine in meeting road safety and infrastructure preservation goals, thereby benefitting vehicle operators, passengers and the broader public".
