Several school buses in Clarke County School District, Georgia have been fitted with camera systems that will provide visual evidence of motorists who violate the flashing red lights and stop arms of school buses as children embark and disembark.

The school bus stop-arm system utilises a series of six camera mounted on the bus to catch violators from several angles. When the stop arm is deployed, the cameras detect vehicles illegally passing in either direction and captures video of the violation and still images of a vehicle‘s licence plate.

Videos of violations and still images of the vehicle’s licence plate are electronically sent to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

6826 American Traffic Systems, the company which supplied the systems, will scrutinise videos and photographs to weed out non-violations, and then transmit them to the police department where they will undergo further review to confirm that a motorist violated the law.

Brazil’s incident-prone Regis Bittencourt Highway was once known as ‘the highway of death’ but investment in ITS systems has brought about some big improvements, as Mauro Nogarin discovers Between 2010 and the end of 2014, Brazil made major investments in traffic technology across its national highways with the result that the ITS network went from 4,963km of fibre optics to 8,524km and the number of cameras increased from 1,127 to 3,208.
