Rail company Brightline is launching a bike-share programme that will place 170 pedal-powered bikes in up to 17 locations throughout West Palm Beach in Florida.

Jonathan Hopkins, vice president of mobility at Brightline, says: “Brightline is excited to add BrightBikes to our fleet of eco-friendly mobility options, making it easier than ever to access our station or the many destinations around West Palm. Together with our great partners we are expanding access to transportation and encouraging people to live a car-free lifestyle.”

The bikes will be part of Brightline+, the company's new door to door service that includes a train service, local transit and ride-sharing.

West Palm Beach mayor Keith A. James says: “BrightBike will expand the transit options offered by the city, improve mobility, and connect users with other transportation methods. BrightBike will greatly benefit residents and visitors, while adding to the liveability, safety and sustainability of our city.”

Brightline, Related Companies and the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority will sponsor BrightBike. Residents can sign up for a monthly unlimited rides membership for $15, while visitors can rent a bike by the hour or day.

The bikes will feature a rugged aluminium frame that is corrosion resistant with front and rear LED lights while helmets are encouraged.

The programme will eventually add electric bikes and provide opportunities for additional station locations.
