UITP has chosen World Car Free Day to launch its Mobility for Life campaign.

Running until December, it is designed to "show the impact public transport can have on each of us, especially as the world opens up again after the Covid-19 pandemic".

In an accompanying video, UITP warns: "But we need to keep investing, developing and innovating. If we continue to nurture public transport, it will draw people into cities and create better, more inclusive and accessible cities. Only with our joint commitment can public transport and its workers, continue to bring cities to life."

The campaign is based on four 'pillars', and UITP says it will focus on each theme for two weeks from next month:

04 Oct: Mobility Links life
18 Oct: Mobility Innovates life
01 Nov: Mobility Fosters life
15 Nov: Mobility Enhances life.

Policymakers and thought leaders are invited to share their views on urban mobility around the themes of the campaign.

"Mobility for Life puts public transport at the centre of any urban mobility system," says UITP secretary general Mohamed Mezghani. "It shows policy makers that an investment in this is an investment in people. I hope it makes those working in public transport proud of their vital contribution to society, while also showing travelers that their mobility choices help create a better world for everyone."

World Car Free Day is held every year on or around 22 September, and promotes the ideas of reduced air pollution and the benefits of walking and cycling in a safer environment.
