The boss of ITS America and the European commissioner for transport are among the high-level speakers at the ITS European Congress in Toulouse.

The event, which runs from 30 May to 1 June 2022 in the French city, will also be addressed on the topic of smart and sustainable mobility by Adina Vălean, European Commissioner for Transport, at the Opening Ceremony on 30 May.

Laura Chace, who is president and CEO of ITS America, is speaking in Plenary 1 on Day 1 of the Congress on ‘Next Generation Mobility: Powered by technology, driven by sustainability’.

"Despite the readiness of the technology to deliver ITS solutions, we must ensure that these solutions are sustainable and equitable that work for our present and future generations," Chace says.

MEP Ismail Ertug is speaking in Plenary 2 on Day 2, in the session ‘Manoeuvring around obstacles on the road to deployment’.

"While the technology sector is making great advances in smart mobility, citizens expect their elected representatives to make sure that this deployment takes place in their best interest and to serve their needs," Ertug explains.

"I am looking forward to discussing this more in-depth especially in terms of questions of citizen engagement, generating user acceptance, preventing monopolies and ensuring the interoperability of solutions."

Meanwhile Matthew Baldwin, deputy director general of the EC's DG Move, will address Plenary 4 on Day 3 in the session ‘Why aren’t we there yet? Getting MaaS to work (and everywhere).’

"For citizens to experience the full benefits of Mobility as a Service, we need to establish the building blocks which will further facilitate cooperation between the different actors and ensure that the solutions are interoperable across the EU," he says. "This will also enable a scale-up from local pilots to pan-European positioning."

The European Commission is placing too much emphasis on the use of demand management, according to the FIA. Here, Wil Botman, Director-General of the FIA's European Bureau, explains why. Towards the end of last year, the European Bureau of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) released a statement which criticised the European Commission's (EC's) approach to urban traffic congestion following the adoption of the Action Plan on Urban Mobility.
