Japanese 3D simulation specialist 848 Forum8 has launched its latest Drive Simulation software plug-in for its award winning interactive VR software UC-win/Road. The plug-in enables users to benefit from the improved vehicle dynamics afforded by incorporating 849 CarSim software into their overall simulator system.

CarSim, produced by Mechanical Simulation, is specialist software for simulating and analysing the behaviour of four-wheeled vehicles in response to steering, braking, and acceleration inputs. Chassis systems, tyres, and electronically controlled driver assistance systems (ADAS) are also being developed and tested in CarSim, which runs faster than real-time using ordinary PC's.

CarSim, which can simulate the dynamic behaviour of passenger cars, light trucks, racing cars, and utility vehicles, animates simulated tests and outputs over 700 calculated variables to plot and analyse, or export to other software systems, HIL systems, and optimisation tools.

As a new report shows that distracted driving is a bigger cause of accidents than previously thought, Jon Masters asks what should be done to counter this problem. Research carried out by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has shed new light on the dangers of distraction for teen drivers. Six years of study using video analysis has shown that 58% of all crashes involving teen drivers are caused by the driver being distracted and proved that the influence of external factors is stronger than previously th

Existing software for timing traffic signals has several limitations, says Carolina Osorio, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at MIT and lead author of a forthcoming paper in the journal Transportation Science that describes the new system, based on a study of traffic

The Western Transportation Institute (WTI) at Montana State University is launching a program to study how to safely integrate driverless technology into the US trucking fleet. Similar to the driverless cars being developed by Google and others, self-driving trucks would use sophisticated computers and GPS technology to navigate roadways. Within a decade, the technology is likely to be applied in semi-autonomous truck convoys, or ‘platoons’, in which trucks equipped with self-driving technology would be pro
